Raul Fernando Gomez Circunegui managed to survive four brutal winter months in the Andes mountains on a diet of rats, raisins, sugar and food he found in a remote cabin he stumbled upon. The Uruguayan man went missing four months ago in the remote mountains, but was found alive by Argentine officials on Sunday, according to a Reuters report.

He set out in May to cross the mountains from Chile to Argentina, but was forced to travel on foot after his motorcycle broke down. The 58-year-old then lost his way during a snowstorm.

Argentine officials from the northwestern province of San Juan who were recording snow levels stumbled across an emaciated Gomez in a shelter 2,840 metres (9,318 feet) above sea level.

"The truth is that this is a miracle. We still can't believe it," said San Juan Governor Jose Luis Gioja, according to the report, which cited local paper Diario de Cuyo newspaper. "We let him talk to his wife, his mother and his daughter. ... I asked him: 'Are you a believer?' He told me, 'no, but now I am.'"

Gomez managed to survive the southern hemisphere's winter, but the ordeal left him dehydrated and 20 kilos (44 pounds) lighter.

The doctor treating Gomez expects him to make a full recovery.

"He's a patient with high blood pressure, a history of smoking and signs of undernourishment," he said. "But he's going to be fine and in a few days we're going to discharge him."
